Practical Life
This section of our Montessori classroom fulfills the desire of
children and young adults to make a contribution towards maintaining
the classroom. In contrast to the widespread aversion in our society
for housekeeping activities, children generally long for
opportunities to express how valuable and independent they are. In
working with water, soap, brooms, bowls, silverware, etc. under the
close supervision of teachers, the qualities of concentration,
memory, and a sense of order are being developed because these
activities are taught as sequential exercises. Not only do these
activities prepare children for the work contained in the more
academic material of the classroom but children continue practicing
these behaviors in the home environment making a very positive
contribution there.
