Welcome to our school. Observation of the child is the basis of the Montessori approach. Each child brings his or her own unique personality to this environment, as well as their background, culture and attitudes of the home.

As you observe, please sit quietly in the chair provided for you. Feel free to change to another chair during your observation. If a child approaches, answer any comment or question. Please do not engage the children in conversation or ask them to demonstrate activities. Some suggestions for your observation are listed below:

     -Observe one child's activity
-The succession of activity; taking out material, working with it, putting it away
-The child's movements - random or controlled
     -Repetition or lack of it
     -Observe choices of activity
-How a choice is made, and by whom (child or teacher)
-Does the choice stem from default, curiosity, superficial choice or decisive interest
-How and when a particular material is exchanged for another
     -Observe Concentration
-Note around whom and which material concentration centers
-Note how soon a particular child begins to concentrate and how long the concentration lasts
-Note concentration in spite of disturbances, and how the teachers and children protect another child's concentration through non-interference
-Note how concentration is regained after an interference
-Observe the care of the environment
-Note interest in care of the environment, and whether it comes from an inner urge (spontaneous dusting, for example) or from the discovery of an outer need (seeing a paper on the floor)
-Note whether the material is used for the purpose for which it was designed
     -Observe the social behavior
-Note examples of cooperation/competition - what stimulates it and what it centers around
-Note instances of helpfulness, whether spontaneous or suggested by a teacher
-Note leadership and following among the children
-Note examples of admiration and compliments between children and spontaneous examples of interest in each other's activities

At the conclusion of your visit, one of us will make an effort to speak to you, or make an appointment for a later time.
